2 movie narratives
GoodFellas vs Casino
Considering their both based on true stories, both directed by Martin Scorcesce, both written by Nicholas Pileggi, and boht starring Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro people always put these two movies in the same sentence.
GoodFellas- (10/10) This is one of my favorite movies ever and I think everything about it reeks of the most top-notch filmaking around. Starting with the acting Liotta is basically a dead-on match for Henry Hill, not too tough, not too soft, but just right in between with a look dead on. Even if his performance was only okay, the chemistry between Liotta and DeNiro as Jimmy the Gent would make up for any lacking in the solo acting category. Then we've got Joe Pesci connecting the 3 into a ball of chemistry that is unstoppable propelling GoodFellas into the stratosphere of fucking awesome. Pesci's crazed Tommy is one of the most memorable movie charcters for me, especially for the 90's, hanging with the likes of Hannibal Lecter because they both stick in your mind. One thing that makes GoodFellas so much better than Casino is Lorraine Braco over Sharon Stone. Whereas Sharon Stone was just annoying (I know she was meant to be), Henry's wife was just a more interesting and well developed character, I never really cared for Sharon Stones character in Casino and I feel like the pacing in GoodFellas is a thousand times better than it was in Casino. GoodFellas by a longshot, great, damn perfect movie.
Casino (9/10, maybe lower)- Casino is good on it's own merits but when I compare it to GoodFellas I can't help but think of GoodFellas being superior in every way. The chemistry between DeNiro and Pesci is stronger here because we see them together for basically 3 hours, where as GoodFellas it's all kinda split up. I enjoy the awesome violence in Casino, such as the head in a vice scene, the buried alive scene, and the part where DeNiro a.k.a Ace takes care of the cheaters in his casino with DA HAMMER! Don't get me wrong Sharon Stone is great in this movie, she rubs you the wrong way just like she should but she just wasn't...I don't know how to put it. I liked Karen Hill much more, she was more developed and you could understand her actions more, Stone's character was just crazy and greedy and her weirdness and constant yelling wre well acted but theypersonally took me out of the movie. But that's just me. The great scenery and nice camera work help, and the script is very good too...but it runs too long. This would have profitted with 20 less minutes, and a little bit less of random plot bits piled on all at once, Scorcesce or Pileggi puit way too much in.
